Carter discusses the hidden premises behind political questions in the form of “what should we do about _______?” and how those unexamined premises lead us to an ever expanding government. He briefly recounts the role early progressives played in embedding these hidden premises into American culture, deriding their obsession with “central planning” as immoral, impractical, and ultimately arrogant. He also investigates the claim that “taxation is theft,” concluding that although this was true in the past, an update to the dictionary definition of “theft” now excludes taxation. Fear not, though, because even by modern definitions taxation is still “plunder.”
