In this second-to-last episode of #CovfefeBreak, Carter is joined by L (a.k.a. SomeBitchIKnow). They discuss the lack of actual journalism and the importance of curiosity and research before lamenting about how short our attention spans have become. L notes the influence of para-governmental organizations such as the Council on Foreign Relations and shares an eye-opening article about the Ghost of Kyiv from Military.com, which praises the fake story for its effectiveness as propaganda. They talk about the difference between the Western government propaganda machine and more straightforward counterparts in China and Russia, and go on to debunk the idea that the United States is a “free market,” using the pharmaceutical industry as an example. Next, L stresses the importance of detaching from the frenzy of the 24-hour news cycle to maintain sanity. The conversation then turns to a discussion of Bond villains and the surveillance state, and L shares her graphcommons page. They chat about conspiracy theories and zombie armies before discussing search engine bias and alternative options like PDFYes. The show ends with a brief look at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensics Research lab before L lets fly a small rant about Bill Gates.
